10-3 Today in class we began talking about the Roles and Statuses that we hold in society. A role is something I play in every day life and make for myself. There are many roles one can hold. Mine include mom, student, worker and wife. Then there is Status. A status is something you are born into such as daughter, son or royalty. My status in society is a daughter. These are very important in society because it keeps things in order. It also helps people understand where they are placed in life and classes. Some people are born in the lower middle class but that can change by changing the roles they play in life. This video is about the different ways roles and statuses have on a person and society. It helps teach ways to change them to be successful.

week for 9/28 Today we learned about Sigmund Freud and the elements of personality. He believed ones personality is shaped by two opposed forces: eros , the life instinct, and t hanatos , the death instinct. According to him our personality includes three basic components: the id, the human being’s basic drives. The ego , a person’s conscious efforts to balance innate pleasure-seeking drives with the demands of society. The superego , the operation of culture within the individual. Having a big ego is seen as a bad thing but according to him its a good thing. This video talks about the Id, Ego, and Superego. It tells how each one helps a person decide what to do as far as right and wrong.

week of 9-25 Today we learned about Socialization - the lifelong social experience by which individuals develop their human potential and learn culture. We were told to make a map of 10 events in our lives that we thought we important to our development. I am choosing to write an autobiography of my life because I believe everything I have gone through is very important and cant be brought to ten events. I believe good or bad things need to happen and that there can always be a way to benefit them. I don't however believe that just because a lot of bad things happen you are to be put in a certain category in life. You are who you make yourself to be. If you make a bad thing good then it wont affect you in a negative way. Peers and media do have an affect but in the end it is all about who you want to be in the end and how you want others to see you as. This video shows the way people are influenced and how we influence others. This is from a movie that influ...

Week 4: 9-18 In class today we talked about culture, nation and society . A culture is a shared way of life. We were given the fish bowl example. If we were all fish we would share the water to live. 5 components of Culture is language, symbol, value/belief, norms of society, and material objects. A Nation is a territory with designated borders. Right now we have a president who wants to enforce our border between Mexico and the United States so we do not have so many illegal immigrants taking jobs from us. A Society is an organized interaction of people who typically live in a nation or some other specific territory. This video explains the pros and cons of culture of society. It gives a better understanding to what culture is how it can impact ones life and the lives around them. How can I hurt society: by not showing an interest in how my culture works How can society hurt me: by not allowing people to show their interests and beliefs. ...

Week 3: Sept. 14- Methodology Today in class we learned about the difference in Quantitive and Qualitive. Quantative is a scientific method that deals with numbers for answers. It uses data, survey, analysis, hypothesis, and statements to find out the truth to the unknown. One example is the research to find out if rank in the military plays a roll in the number of harassment in both men and woman. Qualitive is a scientific method finding the answers and is more verbal. It uses a more direct approach and hands on. You go and ask questions face to face. You observe in their environment. The study of Jazz is a perfect example. It was the study of jazz and if it had any influence on a small community. Its uses more of an Ethnography way. That's where there is more field research and seeing things from other peoples view. I would prefer to do the Ethnography way just because I want to know more from peoples views and not depend on numbers to tell me how many feel this and th...

Week 3: Tuesday (9-11-18) We talked about problems and how we can avoid and/or fix them. One problem that I see anywhere I go is the lack of respect people have for one another in society. I see people in such a rush to get somewhere that they forget that they aren't the only one that is busy. We are all guilty of not holding a door open or rushing by someone and giving a dirty look to them. But what if we were to try and change that. How many good days do you think you would have if someone said, "I hope you have a great day!" or if they let you go in front of them in the lunch line? Simple little gestures make all the difference. There was a gentleman that couldn't get his card to work so I paid for it. There was a mom that had her hands full and couldn't find her wallet and I paid for it. My goal is to make someone's day suck a little less. My husband stops me when I get to frustrated with societies lack of curtesy and reminds me to breath and makes me l...

Week 2: Friday On this day in Sociology 403 we learned about Dramaturgical Analysis. Its the image of society. We resemble actors and actresses and play various roles in our lives. Goffman believed that each person in life is more than just one thing in life. For example, me. I play at least 2. I play the mom and wife role. I make sure my kids are taken care of by feeding, bathing and clothing them. But as a wife I make sure I listen and help with the chores. Both are much alike but bring different things to the table. I am also a student in college so when I am there I make sure that I am focused and ready to listen and take in as much knowledge as I can. Another part of this analysis is Social Exchange Paradgim, social interaction is guided by what wach person stands to gain or lose from others (Homes and Blau). I dully believe that is true. We as people only do things to gain something. When someone helps another out they often hope that karma will be god to them. Or when we pay ...
