Sociology and I

Sociology 403
Week 1:
This week marks a new chapter for me. I got to meet new people and learn more about the world and its many different societies. Like many people, I didn't realize just how important it is to know what is going on in the world and how it all affects us in both positive and negative ways. There are so many people out there that need homes and food and clothing. Not just in my country but all over. Of course many of you knew this. What you didn't know maybe is that many don't have a say in how they live. Here in the U.S. we have a say in how many kids we have, when we have them and with whom we have them with. In other countries that's not the case. In some, woman have 5+ kids before 21. We find ourselves thinking that they should get birth control or practice safe sex but in all reality girls drop out of school once they hit puberty due to not having the proper hygiene products which makes teaching them these things harder. They don't have what they need to be safe or feel comfortable to function in a society. Their standard of living is so different from what I'm use to. I see commercials about giving money to help feed, clothe and educate but they never show what it does only says what it can do. People are more motivated by reactions not actions. For example when I was in high school I was teased and they would wait for my reaction and get a kick from it. That would make them do it more and more.

Three terms that I found interesting were the 3 standards of living.
  1. High income: Nations with highest standards of living
  2. Middle income: Nations with a standard of living about average for the world as a whole
  3. Low income: Nations with a low standard of living in which most people are poor

This is the reason they need our support and help in schools. To use it just and every day thing that we do but to them they have no idea. Washing isn't taught and proper meals are shown to them. There are many ways that we can help them. Some ideas are:
  • send care packages over
  • fund a trip to go show them cooking recipes
  • send books with learning tools

  • How I can help society: I can help by doing my part in voting who I believe should run our county.
  • How can society help me: My society can help me by listening to my concerns and taking action on them.
  • How can I hurt society: I can hurt society by not working and paying my bills/taxes.
  • How can society hurt me: My society can hurt me by raising housing prices and gas prices.
